A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD

HERMES BERRIO SOLO EXHIBITION

OCT 23 – NOV 20, 2021

“A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD” IS THE LATEST SOLO EXHIBITION FROM MIAMI-BASED ARTIST, HERMES BERRIO. A COLLECTION OF PAINTINGS CREATED OVER THE PAST TWO YEARS THAT REPRESENT A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN BERRIO’S ARTISTIC EVOLUTION. HIS INSPIRATION SPRINGS FROM THE EVERYDAY, THE OFT QUIET AND INTIMATE MOMENTS WHICH MAKE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF DAILY LIFE. BERRIO’S PAINTINGS ARE AT ONCE DEEPLY PERSONAL SNAPSHOTS OF HIS PEOPLE AND HIS CITY, AND A SUBLIMELY LAID OUT PERSPECTIVE THAT FEELS UNIVERSAL AND UNPRETENTIOUS. LIKE MUCH OF HIS PAST WORK, HIS PIECES FOR THIS EXHIBITION ARE DOCUMENTARY-LIKE IN NATURE, DERIVED FROM THE ARTIST’S PHOTOGRAPHS. REACHING BEYOND THE SIMPLICITY OF SUCH FUNDAMENTAL DAILY HAPPENINGS, BERRIO’S PAINTINGS PRESENT A MONUMENTAL VISION OF URBAN LIFE.

WORDS FROM THE ARTIST

AFTER MORE THAN 20 YEARS I THINK I AM REACHING A POINT WHERE I AM TRULY FINDING WHAT PAINTING OR BEING AN ARTIST IS ALL ABOUT. MY INSPIRATION IS EVERYTHING AROUND ME; IT TOOK ME SO MUCH TIME AND WORK TO REALIZE THAT, NOW I CAN’T STOP WORKING AS EVERYWHERE I LOOK HAS SOMETHING I WANT TO DEVELOP. MY STYLE HAS HAD RADICAL CHANGES IN THE PAST YEARS, SINCE I’M A PARENT I REALIZED THAT THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE ARE VERY SIMPLE, I THINK THAT IS TRANSLATING INTO MY WORK WITH SIMPLICITY BEING A BIG FACTOR IN MY COMPOSITIONS. MY PROCESS, ALTHOUGH IT LOOKS QUICK AND ENERGIZED, IS FULL OF METHODICAL DETAILS. I WORK NOT TO MAKE A LINE STRAIGHT BUT TO GIVE IT MOVEMENT.

“A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD” IS A SERIES OF PAINTINGS I STARTED DURING THE BEGINNING OF THE PANDEMIC. THEY EXPLORE THE INTRICATE LIVES AND FRAGILE INFRASTRUCTURE OF PROLETARIAT NEIGHBORHOODS IN MIAMI DURING THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES. IMAGES OF ORDINARY PEOPLE, PLACES AND OBJECTS, SOUND ARTLESS BUT ARE QUITE PROFOUND, BEAUTIFUL AND EXTRAORDINARY. THE SUBJECTS OF THE PAINTINGS ARE COMMON PEOPLE, REAL PEOPLE THAT LIVE, WORK AND DO WHAT COMMON PEOPLE DO. MY WORK DEPICTS THEM THROUGH COMMONPLACE EXPERIENCES, WHERE YOU CAN SEE IN THEIR EXPRESSIONS AND POSES, THEIR TRUE BEING, THE MEANING OF THEIR EXTRAORDINARY LIFE.  BY EXPLORING THE COMPLEXITY OF THESE MINIMAL MOMENTS BETWEEN THE PAINTED AND THE PAINTER, I CONSTRUE THESE MOMENTS AS A WAY OF DREAMING AWAKE, THAT IS WHAT I LOOK FOR AND SEIZE.
