HALL OF FAME

ED BRONER SOLO EXHIBITION

JAN 15 – FEB 12, 2022

IN THIS NEWEST BODY OF WORK ED BRONER PAYS HOMAGE TO OTHER ARTISTS WHO HAVE INFLUENCED HIS OWN EVOLUTION AS WELL AS THOSE WHO HAVE SHAPED A GENERATION OF CULTURAL IMAGE MAKERS. FROM SINGERS, ROCK BANDS, AND HOUSE MUSIC PRODUCERS TO DESIGNERS AND FASHION ICONS, BRONER’S WORK FOR “HALL OF FAME” RECOGNIZES THESE IMPORTANT CULTURAL FIGURES.

THE HIP-HOP SUBCULTURE WAS AN INTEGRAL PART OF BRONER’S TEENAGE YEARS GROWING UP IN PARIS. AS A DANCER, T-SHIRT AND SNEAKER COLLECTOR, RAP MUSIC AND STREET WEAR BECAME PART OF HIS IDENTITY AND DAILY LIFE. EXPRESSING HIMSELF AS A VISUAL ARTIST AT THE TIME, HE ALSO PAINTED MURALS AND COMPETED WITH OTHER PAINTERS ON THE HALL OF FAME (A WALL IN BERLIN WHERE GRAFFITI WRITERS WOULD SHOWCASE THEIR BEST PRODUCTIONS). LATER ON, AS A YOUNG ADULT, BRONER ORGANIZED HOUSE MUSIC PARTIES, BOOKING DJS FROM IBIZA, NEW YORK, PARIS, BERLIN, AND TOKYO. HE BECAME A CREATIVE DIRECTOR FOR NIGHT CLUBS, A VENTURE THAT PROMISED MUSIC WOULD BE A DRIVING FORCE BEHIND MUCH OF HIS WORK AS A PAINTER AND PHOTOGRAPHER. FOR THIS EXHIBITION, BRONER SHARES WITH US HIS LOVE FOR HIS FAVORITE BANDS AND ARTISTS.

HIS CURRENT ARTISTIC STYLE EMERGED IN EARLY 2020, WHEN HE DECIDED TO PAINT A CHARACTER IN THE NAÏVE AESTHETIC – A FIGURE WHO COULD REPRESENT THE ARTIST OR ANYBODY ELSE. HE MADE A SERIES OUT OF THIS CHARACTER WITH VISUAL NODS TO THE FAVORITE BANDS OF HIS YOUTH. NOW, LIVING AND WORKING IN BERLIN, BRONER INCORPORATES THESE INFLUENCES GATHERED THROUGHOUT HIS LIFE – FROM URBAN AND CONTEMPORARY ART TO STYLES FROM ABORIGINAL AND AFRICAN CULTURES.

AMONG MANY OF BRONER’S INSPIRATIONS, ONE STANDS AT THE FOREFRONT – THIS SHOW IS DEDICATED TO VIRGIL ABLOH, IN ADMIRATION FOR HIS GENEROSITY TOWARDS ARTISTS FROM LOW SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUNDS AND FOR HIS ADVOCATION OF THE SKATE AND GRAFFITI SUBCULTURE IN THE WORLD OF FASHION. RIP VIRGIL.
